Siena football team was born thanks to the activity of a youths' group who decided to break with the sport club they belonged to (the so called Mens Sana in Corpore Sano sport club) to make a new one contrasting with the previous idea. The new club took the name of Società Studio e Divertimento (Study and Fun sport club) before (1904) and then it was called Società Sportiva Robur (Robur sport club) at the entrance of football game in the Italian sport field (it was imported from America), in 1908. In 1921 the Robur football team started to take part in the official championship gaining an important advancement. The social colour of the team already was black and white-striped. In 1930s Robur was one of the most organized Tuscan sport clubs and in 1933/34 they changed again their name in Associazione Calcio Siena (Siena football club). The new Siena football team reached the serie B (the second Italian division) twice, in 1935 and in 1937/38; actually in that last season the opening of the new stadium was made (it was 8 of December 1938) and it took the name of "Rino Dauss" stadium (its name changed twice in the following years: it was called "Rastrello" and then it took the final and current name of "Artemio Franchi" stadium).

The Siena football team reached some significant winning posts during the following years, as well as important wins versus Fiorentina and Bologna (two of the most influential Italian football teams of that time), but its run was interrupted by the unhappy event of the second world war. From 1945/46 season the club had to deal with a long series of vicissitudes making it continuously oscillate from serie B to serie C (the third Italian division) and also to lower categories, as long as a new young president, Danilo Nannini, came to raise again the fortune of the team (it was in the mid of 1950s). He made a big effort and tought out different devices to save them, even if the real issue of Siena football club was money: it wasn't rich enough to compete with the biggest Italian clubs. At the end of 1960s they were in serie D and Mr Nannini left the team within an inch of flop. After a few years, he took it back (in '80s) making it able to get the serie C1 in 1981/82, then leaving again the direction to Mr Max Paganini, who made the history of Siena football team from that moment until 1997.

In 1997 Paganini gave the team to Mr Claudio Corradini (important name of the SNAI Services group).
In 1999 Siena finally gained the serie B under the training of Mr Sala (the so called 'coach of the rebirth') and after a few time, among the disputes of fans and sports men, all the quotas of the club ended up in Mr Paolo De Luca (who became the new president) and the Finanziaria Senese di Sviluppo's hands who made it grow into a serie A competitive team.

The club currently plays in Serie A, having gained promotion from Serie B at the end of the 2010-2011 season.
