Montalcino in TuscanyMontalcino is known all around the world, especially thanks to its wine, the famous "Brunello di Montalcino".
The town, which takes its name from the many oaks (Montalcino = mountain of oaks) widespread in the area and represented in the coat of arms, is located between the Crete Senesi and the Val d'Orcia, close to Pienza and Monte Amiata.

Probably founded by Etruscans, it was a Abbey of Sant'Antimo possession first and an independent comune after, Montalcino grown a lot thanks to long periods of peace and prosperity, interrupted by episodes of war. A similar feast is the "Tournament for the Opening of the Hunting Season" on August, for the starting of hunting season.

Montalcino is famous also for its "Jazz and Wine" festival in July, with many famous Italian and international jazz artists.

In September there's the "Honey Week", a honey and beehive products show market.

We can't miss to mention the Brunello of Montalcino, one of the famoust Italian red wine, made with Montalcino Sangiovese grapes. It's reknowed all around the world for it's dark color, close to black, that's why its name "Brunello" that means "Nice dark one". Read also Wine of Siena.
